Gee Willikers

I use Google Domains to manage my domain, and I chose Blogger as my CMS platform because I didn’t see the need to give Wix or Squarespace an ungodly amount of money every month for a template that offers parallax effects. But then Google Drive killed its support for hosting files so, now I am left with using Google Cloud. And wouldn’t you know it, Cloud and Blogger won’t play together to host font files.

Looks like I will be pulling all of this down soon and using another company to host my domain as I track down a company that will allow me to host SVG files and web fonts without any cors bullshit.

This is what happens when we find ourselves in a society that tries to do everything for the user: nothing gets done that isn’t blithely generic.

Sound & Fog

My husband opened his very own boîte in West Seattle back in July. I had some time on my hands so I went and updated his website. A little HMTL5, some CSS3, a bit of potions and lotions, some bed knobs and broomsticks later, voilà.

Oh yeah, I also did the logo.

I still need to make a few edits, add some logos of the featured brands in his store, and then finish up the media queries. But the majority of his online audience is on their smartphone so, it was important to get that taken care of first. What took the most time was building the menu without <TABLE> tags. All <DIV>s with a bit of blocking and floating.

Order of Nothingness

Blogger was an amazing CMS in its day. I knew a few folks who dabbled in Blogger but I could never bring myself to love it. Even now I flip through all the template designs and bemoan the looks of yesteryear. I could redesign the entire experience, I suppose. I would be tethered to Google fonts unless I intended to host my own files—a service that is oddly missing from Google Domains.

I was planning to list the pros for redesigning my Blogger site, but I had to think long and hard about typing “keeping my HTML skills sharp.” Who still uses HTML in 2016? My world is now made up of dp and dpi. Everything is scalable. Well, except Blogger. That’s just responsive.

Right. Let’s open the hood and see what we can do around here.
