Calling all Seattle residents*: my friend Drew’s movie Inlaws & Outlaws is having its theatrical premiere at the Cinerama this coming Thursday at 8pm. Then it plays for two full weeks at Uptown Cinemas in Queen Anne. If you’ve never seen this movie, it’s an awesome take on our society’s take on relationships from all walks of life.

Ever since I activated Trackback for my blog, I have received spam pings for everything under the sun. Most of the spam is for prescription meds or pr0n. I didn’t mind the spam so much as I made certain that no Trackback would be published without my approval, but that was before my Inbox was damn near flooded with Trackback approval messages. I doubt if anyone really needs to create a thread based on one of my entries.
I don’t know exactly how long Movable Type has had Trackback functionality, but after a while one would think of coding a better process to thwart spam.
Movable Type 4 Beta released

I’ve been using MT since 2002, and I have to say that this new release leaves much to be desired. I stopped using the Insert Image option after the third screenshot, there are far too many steps inserted into the UI now to make the program usable.
First I had to figure out where my publishing option went, and after searching for a few seconds I decided to click on “Display Options”. Then:
- The delta to the left of “Display” is incredibly light, instead I clicked the text to expand my available list of options.
- In order to publish an entry, options for Title, Body and Publishing are anything but. I selected Publishing.
- In order for me to associate this entry with a category, I had to also select Category.
- A window appeared in a strange area of the page, I was expecting a lightbox effect similar to what is used for uploading an image. I like that I could select more than one category, the options are a lot easier to use than the previous select menu. With my category selected, I only had to click OK to begin this entry.
And there you go. Just to say I want to publish this entry in technology. Jesus, this is crazy. If I have a clickable icon to insert an image or file, then I want the same to view options for categories and feedback. When I do upload an image, I don’t want to have an extraneous SPAN tag wrapping the picture with class attributes thrown in everywhere. Stop trying to do everything for me.
So far, the new UI seems to only complicate the publishing process, not streamline. With the announcement of Movable Type 4 Β, I was hoping to see Six Apart bring the various technologies from MT, LiveJournal and VOX into one application, instead I have an even larger library in my CGI bin without little to show for it.
If you already use MT 3.34, stick with it. You aren’t missing much, but you would if you use 4.

That explains why I know this stuff — I’m actually a distant relative of Wicket and Logray. (Long ago, in a galaxy far far away, they had a commitment ceremony on Endor.)
What’s interesting about the message is that it starts out in Tagalog and then takes a big turn to Ilocano (a northern regional language that I don’t know, but my dad spoke).
Anyhow, I’m running to catch a plane to Sin City, so here’s a very rough translation:
Hey, are you there??? (means kind of like ‘did you get this?’)
We finally got internet access, but we don’t have a web cam — or do you have a web cam? (something about seeing)
Where is the… (lots of rambling) I have Josie’s address (additional rambling) …send it to Aunt Jona.
Sounds like she’s asking the recipient to send something to a family member. Anyhow, hope that helps until maybe someone else who actually speaks Ilocano can give you a cleaner translation. =)

Apple sent its release about iTunes Plus this morning:
I still have not read the entire e-mail, for the obvious lack of kerning in the text graphics has burned a hole in my heart. The lack of kerning wouldn’t so painful to view if the team responsible for the graphics let one letter pair slip their scrutiny, but over ten?
Jesus Mother Mary Joseph. Nary the kerning! NARY! I may faint.
Memo to Apple: if you are going to bill yourselves as the computer of choice for designers, it would be to your benefit if you were to practice what you preach. Hell, y’all, just watch videos for free at Yahoo! Music and buy DRM-free music in a little-known (overlooked, you might say) format called MP3 at eMusic.
