Winter Mix 2008 is (finally) here

WinterMix2008.jpg

Every holiday I compile songs into a winter mix for friends and family. Normally I’ve only compiled songs that can fit onto 1 CD, but this year I decided to compile 51 songs for 3 CDs. Because a, I’m generous with friends and family, and b, there was a lot of good music that came my way this year: electronic, hip-hop, instrumental, alternative—everything but gospel and country.

The Winter Mix isn’t for public consumption, but drop me a line if you’d like to receive or trade mixes. Have a Safe and Happy 2008.

ox,
-J. (and Vinnie)

p.s. No, I still haven’t made my holiday cards. Shut it.

Holiday Wishes

Now is a good time for me to learn Italian and save money like an aging whore on her way out of Nevada: Prada to pursue IPO next year

After flirting with the stock market for the last seven years, Prada said Wednesday it had approved the start of the process for listing the company on the Milan Stock Exchange.

The listing is planned for 2008, depending on market conditions, the company said.

I suppose I’ll also need to figure out how to invest on the Milan Stock Exchange. Details.

Prada is offering gifts on its site for purchase. Rest assured, you can buy me the airport travel kit and I will so not accuse you of buying me a thoughtless gift.

2007 Music Countdown

Where the hell did this year go? Already with December, fine, I get that whole concept of a calendar, but seriously wasn’t it just yesterday that we celebrated Halloween? And just what am I supposed to do with military winter gear covered in layers of fake blood? Just toss it away? These are questions; they don’t keep me up at night.

My friends and I back in New York started an annual tradition of naming our favorite albums for 2007. I always had a hard time with this list because I never just turned myself on to new artists. Most of the time I would pick up a used CD for my 4AD catalogue needs or find an album produced a couple years back that somehow fell under my radar. This year is a little different as I bought less than 10 physical CDs, almost my entire music library is completely digital. I’d like to thank eMusic for making most of this happen. And a small shout-out to iTunes, but really small. Like redheaded stepchild small.

So here is my list* of favorite albums of 2007, in no particular order:

  • Japancakes – Loveless
  • The Hope Blister – Underarms (reissue) and Sideways
  • Blacken The Black – Entrance to the Exit
  • Justice – †
  • Simian Mobile Disco – Attack Decay Sustain Release
  • Celebration – The Modern Tribe
  • Cass McCombs – Dropping the Writ
  • Antony and the Johnsons – anything and everything
  • Emiliana Torrini – see Antony and the Johnsons
  • Fauve – Fauve
  • The Chemical Brothers – We Are The Night
  • Aril Brikha – Ex Machina
  • Boys Noize – Oi Oi Oi
  • Siouxsie – Mantaray
  • Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
  • Piano Magic – Incurable
  • Klima – Klima
  • Holy Fuck – Holy Fuck
  • Jóhann Jóhannsson – Englabörn
  • Air – Pocket Symphony
  • Jurassic 5 – Power in Numbers
  • Akala – Freedom Lasso
  • Common – Finding Forever
  • Ida Maria
  • Poni Hoax – Poni Hoax
  • Juliette & The Licks – Four on the Floor

*This is just a list, you aren’t going to find downloads here. Like I want to lead the RIAA to my front door?
