Somebody beat me to it: Apple hit with class-action lawsuit over iPhone 3G flakiness

I got an iPhone. Now what?

2008 July 13

What’s stupid:

  1. I asked the Apple Store kid if I could use my iTunes library at home and office on my iPhone. He said yes. Kid lied.
  2. I can’t use MP3 files as ringtones: I either have to accept the ringtones that came with my iPhone – “marimba” sounded like a toy box, I can’t take that seriously – purchase new ones for $2 on iTunes music store, or purchase software that converts my music files. Why can’t I just use MP3 files?
  3. I can’t send a friend a text message with a photo attachment, I can only e-mail photos. Who came up with this?
  4. How do I empty my browser cache and clear my history?
  5. I have Bluetooth but my computer can’t browse my device.
  6. If I allow the iPhone to join my home Wi-Fi, my computer loses half its access.

Twitterwhat?

2008 June 02

First the script:

I have been using Plurk and I think you should check it out!

“Plurk.com – Your life, on the line”

Srsly? I love Plurk. Twitter iswas fun but trying to keep track of friends without a timeline proves difficult. Not only can I see when my friends post – plurk – a message, I can also comment on them. And, AND, you can toggle between public and private plurks.

Watching the site is obsessive—how can other social networks compete with this level of cool? Now if only Plurk will integrate with iTunes…

Opossum

2008 May 28

Most site visitors arrive on my site after searching for “jhames” or “aiden shaw”; I also receive visits from other sites, more often than not private bookmarks. This morning I found a site referrer that only had this information to present its visitors:

Opossum est un nom donné aux mammifères de la famille des didelphidés.

L'opossum est présent en nouvelle zélande , il y a été introduit par les premiers colons.

What I want to know is why someone would introduce opossum to New Zealand?

Today I received an e-mail addressed to “Dear Adobe software owner” [HOW PERSONAL!!!]

Please take note that Adobe has discontinued development and sales of Adobe® GoLive® web authoring software. This decision – effective April 28, 2008 – was made so we can focus our development efforts and sales resources on Adobe Dreamweaver® software, our web design and development application.

There was more to the e-mail but I didn’t finish scanning the first paragraph. I like to scan text when bullet points are not available. There were bullet points in the e-mail but I had to scan through two paragraphs of blah blah blah. Who has time for that?

I can’t say I’m sorry to see GoLive fade into memory, I haven’t touched the software since Coda was released. Bless Adobe’s heart just the same.

iPhone gets a makeover

2008 May 12

I know I’m posting this almost two weeks after the fact, but that only shows to prove how little I follow all things iPhone. But the following article The second-gen iPhone: 3G, GPS, only slightly thicker on engadget caught my eye:

The most noticeable physical difference is back of the phone is no longer metal -- the whole thing is glossy black, from top to bottom. The volume buttons are now chrome.

Huh. Now why does that description sound so… familiar. The funny thing? Its second generation is now silver.

Lookeeme! I’m a Typographer!

2008 April 09

From the moment I saw the splash page for FontStruct I knew FontShop was responsible for such genius—color palette aside. If you don’t know what FontStruct is, you will when the web is quickly flooded with fonts created with this tool. I think a lot of the fonts made will resemble bitmap predecessors (Émigré? Anyone?) for a brief period of time, but expect to see some fantastic styles develop.

I think this site just replaced any other online distraction I’ve ever known or loved. But then again, I am a whore for typography.

Now just where the hell do I put all these on my blog? And will I have still have room for blinky text? These questions keep me drinking at night.

Keeping up with the kittens

2008 March 08

I use a Mac Pro Xeon whachamadoohickie at my company but the desktop isn’t working quite right. My screen freezes and/or flickers, I have to restart my system at least three times a day. I brought my Mac Pro to the Apple store and their technicians are taking a look at it. In the meantime, I will be using my PowerBook G4 that I bought back in 2003.

Know what’s cool? I installed Mac OS X Leopard this morning. On my PowerBook. And my computer can actually handle the upgrade! See?

desktop_hero20071016.png

My desktop kinda sorta looks like this. But wider. And with more apps in the dock and files all over the screen. Look at me all up to date with technology!

Now I just need to buy iWork and update all my software. By update I of course mean make quick friends with people at Adobe and The Omni Group.

No shame in my game

After reading “The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs: Remember the magic?” I’d like to point out that I am still in love with my PRADA phone, and that even the Jesus phone fans drool when they touch my goods.

A reason to finally heart my .Mac account

More online storage for .Mac members

Thank the fuck God for the boost to iDisk storage, 250MB was simply not enough to store all my fantabulous mixes for friends. Now that 10GB will soon grace my .Mac storage, I plan to throw up as many mixes as possible. What, you thought I would use the extra space for photo galleries to share with family and friends? Honey, that’s what flickr is for. I am a music whore, I know how to make the most of my space. Trust.

Tacky

2007 July 09

Microsoft Live Search Maps has a new campaign called thepushpinproject.com for local stores to display a big, inflatable red push pin sticking out from their buildings. I suppose if I had never heard of yelp, which is easier to remember and type than thepushpinproject.com, I’d be more excited about the campaign. The following error message doesn’t fill me with much confidence, either:

Consequently, trying to access the homepage by clicking on the name graphic results in 404 Not Found. All that rush to push out a campaign, and none of the QA. Huh. Hate to be the agency responsible for such lack of detail.

Some things never change

2007 June 09

Ever since I activated Trackback for my blog, I have received spam pings for everything under the sun. Most of the spam is for prescription meds or pr0n. I didn’t mind the spam so much as I made certain that no Trackback would be published without my approval, but that was before my Inbox was damn near flooded with Trackback approval messages. I doubt if anyone really needs to create a thread based on one of my entries.

I don’t know exactly how long Movable Type has had Trackback functionality, but after a while one would think of coding a better process to thwart spam.

Movable Type 4 Beta released

2007 June 07

I’ve been using MT since 2002, and I have to say that this new release leaves much to be desired. I stopped using the Insert Image option after the third screenshot, there are far too many steps inserted into the UI now to make the program usable.

First I had to figure out where my publishing option went, and after searching for a few seconds I decided to click on “Display Options”. Then:

06.png
  1. The delta to the left of “Display” is incredibly light, instead I clicked the text to expand my available list of options.
  2. In order to publish an entry, options for Title, Body and Publishing are anything but. I selected Publishing.
  3. In order for me to associate this entry with a category, I had to also select Category.
  4. A window appeared in a strange area of the page, I was expecting a lightbox effect similar to what is used for uploading an image. I like that I could select more than one category, the options are a lot easier to use than the previous select menu. With my category selected, I only had to click OK to begin this entry.

And there you go. Just to say I want to publish this entry in technology. Jesus, this is crazy. If I have a clickable icon to insert an image or file, then I want the same to view options for categories and feedback. When I do upload an image, I don’t want to have an extraneous SPAN tag wrapping the picture with class attributes thrown in everywhere. Stop trying to do everything for me.

So far, the new UI seems to only complicate the publishing process, not streamline. With the announcement of Movable Type 4 Β, I was hoping to see Six Apart bring the various technologies from MT, LiveJournal and VOX into one application, instead I have an even larger library in my CGI bin without little to show for it.

If you already use MT 3.34, stick with it. You aren’t missing much, but you would if you use 4.

My site especially, honey

2007 May 26

I know this is, like, so 2000, but I love that my site is a search result for “i say fuck it! but you'll get no pussy! fuck it!”. For real, y’all.

I see good apps, I see bad apps

2007 April 25

If you own a Mac and do your own web design and development, then you already know that Transmit® from Panic® is the coolest FTP client ever made. Kooler than Jesus, if you will. My frustration with working in HTML was thus: I could make changes using Transmit’s native editor, or I could opt to use Adobe® GoLive® CS2 which provides better use of writing code in source mode. The minds of Panic must have felt my frustration, for lo and behold they have created Coda®: an editor and FTP client (and more!) rolled into one. And if you already own Transmit 3.x, you get a price break on Coda.

Customer loyalty makes for brand loyalty, kids. Write that down.

I’m not sure why Panic chose a dewy leaf as the icon for Coda, but I suppose a typeball would be less cute. Since Adobe is no longer carrying GoLive with Creative Suite®, and I don’t think anyone is mourning that loss, Coda is a welcome addition to my cadre of software. Now if Panic could only make a software app that functions like Microsoft® Visio® and – AND! – converts site maps into web sites…

Videocide

2007 April 08

I’m a little late to the party, but did you know about this Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act? Effective 17 February 2009, analog television will no longer exist. Literally, the plug will be pulled on all analog broadcasts, and all television will be digital. The catch? The television I bought less than 2 years ago will only be good for watching DVDs, because I’ll have to buy an HDTV. To appreciate quality shows such as “American Idol” and “The Ghost Whisperer” in high-definition digital quality whatever.

What’s the problem with Digital Television? Just say no to Digital Television? The answer: WHO CARES, have you seen the government’s web site for digital television (DTV)? Today’s entry, along with the preceding web site, was brought to you by the word “nepotism”. Jesus, this is what passes for web design? No wonder the American dollar is worthless in international trade.

Simplify, man! Simplify!

2007 March 30

My friend Dave told me last night about a rather brilliant online organizer named Scrybe. The video overview is fascinating to watch – love that guitar transition – but the application seems to rely heavily on accessing options with a right-click of the mouse. Since Scrybe is still beta, at the time this post was published, I would ask why right-click anything at all? Don’t click it, Daddy-o.

One site to rule them all, and in the API bind them.

2007 February 13

AIM Pages, Blogger, Connexion, Dodgeball, flickr, 43 Things, Friendster, Hyves, Jake, lala, Last.fm, LinkedIn, LiveJournal, MSN Spaces, MySpace, Orkut, Piczo, tagworld, Tribe, WAYN, Yahoo! 360°, YouTube… How the hell does one manage so many social networks with ease? Right now, you can’t. Yet.

From “Social-Networking Sites Open Up” on BusinessWeek online:

Now, several social networks are about to open up. Facebook—aimed at college students and a pioneer in opening up its APIs—will move its developer program out of beta testing. The company won’t say exactly when it will make its software generally available, but says it will be soon. Rivals such as News Corp.’s (NWS) MySpace.com, LinkedIn, Friendster, and Google’s (GOOG) orkut are expected to follow suit and open their code to third-party developers this year as well—promising to kick off a spurt of innovation in social networking. “Part of what’s exciting about a developer community is you don’t know what people are going to do,” says Lucian Beebe, director of product management at LinkedIn, which is considering opening up its software. “It offers you the ability to harness innovation.”

And, yes, I’m just as surprised as you that I don’t have a Facebook profile.
